Let’s say that you are a Unicorn.

People have various reactions to you – to what you are.

Some say,
“That’s ridiculous. You can’t be a Unicorn. There’s no such thing. Don’t be foolish.”

Others say,
“Well, aren’t you adorable? So quaint. So otherworldly. A little out of touch and funny. Cute!”

Also,
“I believed in Unicorns once, when I was younger. But life is tough and your heart gets broken. Your presence is unsettling to me because I might have to reconsider – and then my heart might break all over again.”

And,
“Look, it’s not realistic. You have to live in the real world. You can’t just go around being a Unicorn and expect to get anywhere.”

And,
“Sure, easy for you to be a Unicorn. But I’ve had it hard! I’d love to be a Unicorn but I haven’t had your advantages. You were just born lucky. Don’t be offended but I hate you a little bit for that.”

And,
“You are AMAZING. Thank you for being a Unicorn and not trying to be a horse or a donkey just to fit in. I love a world that has Unicorns in it.”

All of this and more you will hear if you are a Unicorn. Scorn, dismissal, envy, resentment, condescension, appreciation, hero-worship. Tons of pain and wonder and projection.

None of it changes the fact of what you are. Beyond the comments, before the opinions and words, that’s what you are: a Unicorn.

PS – We’re ALL Unicorns: uniquely ourselves. And there is always a response to that uniqueness. That thing that not everyone understands and which can be chipped away by commentary? That non-conformity is the essence of your magic.

PPS – A kind friend let me know that the term “Unicorn” in addition to the mythical creature has a surprisingly salacious usage these days (you can google it). Just to be clear, that was not the meaning I intended.
