What are music lessons with me like?  What do we do?

Each lesson is a kind of “meal” with different courses to keep you growing, engaged, and happy.  Here are the courses:

Fundamentals and Grounding
These include warm-ups, finger exercises, scales, arpeggios, and chord work.  These are the sit-ups and push-ups of the lesson, and they help us grow stronger, more agile, and more confident.

New Pieces Each Week
My philosophy – adopted from my own teacher’s approach – is that we learn a lot when we play right through a book, pausing to focus more deeply on pieces you like, and whooshing past those you don’t like, but at least touching everything in the book one time.  Doing this helps you to discover what you like, develop your repertoire, and keeps you interested and curious about what’s coming next.  In addition to your main book, I think about you, your style, and your preferences and bring you new pieces to try that offer you the next level of challenge and achievement.  It’s fun and it keeps you growing.

Music Building Blocks
Some people call this music theory, but in the most practical sense, this part of your lesson equips you to create your own music, to accompany other people, to play from lead sheets, and to jam with friends.  In  a nutshell, I want you to have all the tools you need to make your music, your way.  These building blocks include chord-building recognition and exercises, left-hand patterns (for piano and harp), major and minor keys, dynamics, and chord sequences so that you can play chords in the left hand with a tune in the right.

Improvisation and Imagination
Each week, you’ll have a chance to play from your heart and imagination, often with a helpful prompt from me.  It’s easy and fun and freeing, and it gives you a chance to use everything you’re learning in something entirely new and original.  Most of my students love this part of the lesson.

Inspiration and Guidance
This includes help in deciding and establishing practice routines, staying excited, making progress, and having FUN!
