Studio Work and Fun

I’ve been going to see engineer, Steve Friedman, about once a week for the last few weeks and we’re nearly done recording my voice, harp, and piano for the new Irish CD. I’m thrilled by how productive and fun this has been, how much gets done in just a few hours, and the fun of racing up and down the stairs to hear how things have turned out. It is serious fun, abiding, non-fading, challenging fun, the kind that you could have everyday of your life and feel you were in exactly the right place doing exactly what your heart most desires.

This is not to say that it’s easy fun, though. Sometimes, but not always! There are times when I hit a sour note or lose the words or warble unbecomingly and then it has to be done again, and better. The trouble there is that the brain starts its little gavotte and suddenly you are thinking way too hard and the instinct and blood have gone out of the music. I haven’t sworn but I have berated myself once or twice within Steve’s hearing; he assures me that he’s heard curses and oaths that would curl your hair, so I guess I’m pretty mild. I tend to laugh, shake out my hands, get up and twirl the cord on the headphones. When I sit down again, I’m eager to go back into the song through its magic side-door – the door that only opens when you’re loose and happy, not too eager, and ready to greet its many surprises like friends.
